A cable consisting of one or more thin flexible fibers with a glass core through which light signals can be sent with very little loss of strength is called fiber optic cable. They're designed for long-distance, high-performance data networking, and telecommunications. Compared to wired cables, fiber optic cables provide higher bandwidth and transmit data over longer distances. Optical fiber cabling is used to transfer information via pulses of light, which pass along one or more - indeed, anything up to a couple of hundred in some cases - transparent glass or plastic pipes. Each of these strands is little wider than an average hair, and will normally be surrounded by a further layer of cladding.
